James Newland

“My grandfather James Newland married Blanch Squibb in 1909 and they then lived in the buildings. I’m not sure of the number think it was 112. They had 9 children Winifred (1910), Blanch (1911), Ivy (1912), Jimmy (1914), Bertie and Lily (1916), Billy (1918), Stanley (1922) and my Mum Maureen (1936). They all lived in 2 rooms. My Grandmother took in other peoples’ washing so she could have use of the washroom on their landing. She was usually paid in kind by the butchers and bakers etc. I also know that James Newland (1863) – his sibling Jessie married Fred Soaper and they lived there as well as Margaret Newland (1903) not on the 1901 census obviously.”
Rachel

21/10/10 I have recently had the following note from Rachel Burland:

“My Mum Maureen Newland passed away on 13th September 2010. She was the ninth (and last) child of James Joshua Newland and Blanche Jane Squibb. Mum was born in the Buildings but was taken at just over 2 years old to live with her 3rd eldest sister Ivy Rosina Newland. They lived first in Abingdon and then Kings Norton, Birmingham (where I was born 1965). So Mum is the last of the nine children to go. I have many surviving cousins who are almost as old as Mum was (74) because Mum arrived 14 years after her next brother Stanley. ”

If anyone would like to contact her, please use the contact page and I will pass any message on.
